Calcutta
Hooghly River metropolis
Calcutta is the former official name of Kolkata, a major city in eastern India and capital of West Bengal.
The British colonial-era spelling remained standard until 2001, when India officially adopted the Bengali pronunciation.
The name still appears in historical contexts and some established institutions: the Black Hole of Calcutta, Mother Teresa's work in Calcutta.
