CD

Optical storage medium

A CD is a compact disc—a plastic disc encoded with digital data, originally for audio recordings but later for any computer files.

CDs largely replaced cassette tapes in the 1990s before being supplanted by streaming and downloads: I still have boxes of CDs in the garage.

CD also abbreviates certificate of deposit, a bank product with a fixed interest rate for a set term: She put her savings in a two-year CD.
