bootleg

Smuggled or counterfeit

Bootleg refers to goods that are made, distributed, or sold illegally—typically alcohol during Prohibition, but now more commonly recordings, software, or other media produced without authorization.

As a verb, to bootleg is to make or traffic in such goods: He bootlegged concert recordings in the '90s.

The adjective describes anything unauthorized or illicit: bootleg whiskey, bootleg copies of the album.

In American football, a bootleg is a deceptive play where the quarterback fakes a handoff and runs with the ball hidden against his leg.
