phonograph record

Grooved music platter

A phonograph record is a flat vinyl disc with spiral grooves that encode sound, played by a stylus tracking the grooves as the disc spins.

Records dominated music distribution through most of the 20th century before CDs and digital formats largely replaced them.

They persist among audiophiles and collectors who prefer the analog sound.

Often shortened to record; also called a vinyl or LP (long-playing record).
