worldbuilding
Fictional universe construction
Worldbuilding is the process of constructing an imaginary world, especially for fiction, games, or other creative projects.
It encompasses geography, history, cultures, languages, and rules governing how the world operates: The author spent years on worldbuilding before writing the first chapter.
Good worldbuilding creates internal consistency—magic systems have limits, societies have economies, actions have consequences.
The term emerged from fantasy and science fiction but now applies to any elaborate fictional setting.
