spirits

Haunting bar stock

Spirits has two main clusters of meaning.

The first concerns alcohol—distilled liquors like whiskey, gin, and vodka: a spirits license, wine and spirits.

The second concerns supernatural beings or the animating essence of persons: evil spirits, ancestral spirits, the spirits of the dead.

When someone's spirits are high or low, the reference is to mood or vitality: Her spirits lifted when she heard the news.
