character development
Fictional person's arc
Character development is the process of creating and deepening a fictional person's personality, motivations, and arc within a story.
Writers craft character development through backstory, dialogue, and choices that reveal who someone is: The novel's slow character development made the betrayal devastating.
The term also describes a character's transformation over the course of a narrative—their growth, decline, or change.
In casual use, people joke about real-life experiences as character development: Getting dumped twice in one month? That's just character development.
