dystopia
Imagined oppressive state
Dystopia is an imagined society characterized by oppression, suffering, or injustice—the opposite of utopia.
The word typically describes fictional worlds where authoritarian control, environmental ruin, or technological excess has created nightmarish conditions: Orwell's 1984 remains the quintessential dystopia.
Dystopian as an adjective extends beyond fiction to describe real conditions that feel oppressively bleak: The abandoned factory district had a dystopian quality.
