colonies
Overseas imperial possessions
Colonies is the plural of colony.
A colony is a territory controlled by a distant power, or a group of people who settle in such a territory: the thirteen colonies that became the United States.
Colonies also refers to groups of organisms living together: ant colonies, colonies of bacteria.
In casual use, colonies of anything cluster in one place: colonies of artists in Greenwich Village.
