adze

Curved timber shaper

An adze is a woodworking tool with a curved blade set at right angles to the handle, used for shaping and smoothing wood.

Unlike an axe, which cuts with the grain, an adze cuts across or along the surface, hollowing or planing.

Traditional boatbuilders and furniture makers still use adzes for work that power tools handle clumsily.
