froe
Shingle maker's blade
A froe is a woodworking tool for splitting shingles, shakes, and staves from a log.
It has a blade set perpendicular to the handle, struck with a mallet and then twisted to cleave wood along the grain.
The design gives leverage for controlled splitting: He shaped the shingles with a froe and mallet.
Also spelled frow.
