backspin

Ball's backward spin

Backspin is rotation of a ball opposite to its direction of travel, imparted by striking or throwing it in a way that makes the top spin backward.

In tennis and golf, backspin causes the ball to stop quickly or bounce back upon landing.

In pool and basketball, it affects how the ball behaves after contact: She put backspin on the cue ball to draw it back after the shot.
