kremlin

Historic Russian stronghold

A kremlin is a Russian citadel or fortified complex, typically the historic center of a Russian city containing palaces, cathedrals, and government buildings.

Several Russian cities have kremlins, though the word is rarely used in lowercase except in historical or architectural contexts.

The ancient kremlin dominated the city skyline. (Capitalized Kremlin refers specifically to Moscow's citadel and, by extension, the Russian government.)
