boyar

Czarist landed gentry

A boyar was a member of the aristocratic class in medieval Russia and other Slavic countries, ranking just below the ruling princes.

Boyars held large estates, served as military commanders and advisors, and wielded considerable political power until Peter the Great abolished their special status in the early 18th century.

The tsar rewarded his loyal boyars with land grants.
