republican
Favors elected leaders
A republican supports or advocates for a republic—a form of government where power rests with citizens who elect representatives rather than with a monarch or emperor.
The term describes both the political philosophy and its adherents: republican ideals, a committed republican.
In countries with monarchies, republicans actively oppose royal rule: Irish republicans sought independence from Britain. (Capitalized Republican refers to members of the U.S. political party.)
