overseer

One who supervises

An overseer is someone who supervises work or workers.

The term appears most often in historical contexts—particularly describing those who managed enslaved people on plantations: The overseer drove the field hands from dawn to dusk.

In modern use, overseer sounds formal or archaic, largely replaced by supervisor or manager.

It survives in some institutional titles and in figurative use for anyone monitoring others' activities.
