taiko

Traditional Japanese drum

Taiko are large Japanese drums, barrel-shaped and played with wooden sticks called bachi.

The word refers both to the instruments and to the style of ensemble drumming that became a performing art in the twentieth century.

Taiko performances combine powerful rhythms with choreographed movement: The taiko ensemble opened the festival with thundering drums.
