stave
Cooper's curved plank
A stave is a narrow strip of wood forming part of a barrel, bucket, or similar vessel.
The curved staves fit together to create the sides.
By extension, stave refers to any of the rungs of a ladder or the vertical bars of a railing.
In music, a stave is the set of five horizontal lines on which notes are written—more commonly called a staff.
To stave in is to break inward: The hull was staved in by rocks.
To stave off is to fend off or delay: She ate an apple to stave off hunger until dinner.
