tacks

Bulletin board hardware

Tacks are small, sharp-pointed nails with flat heads, used to fasten things temporarily or to surfaces like corkboard: She used tacks to pin the poster to the wall.

In sailing, a tack is a course relative to the wind, or the maneuver of changing that course.

Figuratively, to change tack is to shift approach: When charm failed, he tried a different tack.

To tack something on is to add it as an afterthought.

Tack also refers to a horse's harness and saddle equipment.
