kami

Japanese divine beings

Kami are spirits or gods in Japanese Shinto belief.

The concept encompasses deities, natural phenomena, ancestors, and sacred forces dwelling in mountains, rivers, trees, or remarkable objects.

A kami may be benevolent or dangerous, grand or local—from the sun goddess Amaterasu to the spirit of a particular waterfall.

The word has no true English equivalent; "god" undersells the breadth of what qualifies as kami.
