basting

Spooning juices over

Basting has two unrelated meanings.

In cooking, to baste is to pour or brush liquid—pan drippings, melted butter, marinade—over meat while it roasts to keep it moist: She basted the turkey every thirty minutes.

In sewing, to baste is to make long, loose temporary stitches that hold fabric in place before permanent stitching: Baste the hem before you sew it.
