upwind

Toward air's source

Upwind means in the direction from which the wind is blowing—the opposite of downwind.

To stand upwind of something is to have the wind carry its scent away from you: Stay upwind of the campfire smoke.

Hunters approach game from upwind so their scent won't alert the prey.

As an adjective: the upwind side of the island.
