tackler

Stops the runner

A tackler is someone who tackles—whether bringing down a ball carrier in football or rugby, or taking on a difficult problem.

The word appears most often in sports contexts: He's one of the best tacklers in the league.

Outside athletics, anyone who confronts challenges directly might be called a tackler: She's a real tackler of bureaucratic red tape.
