gybing
Downwind boom shift
Gybing is the sailing maneuver of changing course by swinging the stern through the wind, causing the boom to shift from one side to the other.
It's the opposite of tacking, which brings the bow through the wind.
Gybing can be dangerous in strong winds if the boom swings uncontrolled: We were gybing when the boom nearly took his head off.
Also spelled jibing.
