pet

Household animal friend

A pet is an animal kept for companionship rather than utility—dogs, cats, hamsters, and the like.

The word extends to favorites: a teacher's pet gets special treatment.

As an adjective, pet describes personal favorites or preoccupations: a pet project, a pet peeve.

To pet is to stroke affectionately, and by extension, to engage in sexual touching short of intercourse: petting in the back seat.

As a term of endearment, pet is common in British dialects: Come here, pet.
