embolism

Blocked blood vessel

An embolism is a blockage of a blood vessel, typically by a clot, air bubble, or other material that has traveled through the bloodstream from elsewhere in the body.

The blockage cuts off blood flow, potentially causing serious damage—a pulmonary embolism blocks arteries in the lungs, while a cerebral embolism can cause stroke.
