fluke

Whale tail's end

Fluke has two distinct origins in English.

One fluke is a stroke of luck—an outcome achieved by chance rather than skill: It was a total fluke that we ran into each other.

A fluke can also be a lucky shot in billiards or a fortuitous catch in fishing.

The other fluke refers to flat, pointed structures: the triangular blade of an anchor, the lobe of a whale's tail, or a parasitic flatworm that infests livers and intestines.
