thrombosis

Internal clot formation

Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of blood through the circulatory system.

The clot itself is called a thrombus.

When thrombosis occurs in deep veins, typically in the legs, it's called deep vein thrombosis or DVT—a condition travelers on long flights are warned about.

If a clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs, heart, or brain, the consequences can be fatal.
