Elite assault infantry
Stormtroopers were members of the SA (Sturmabteilung), the Nazi Party's paramilitary wing in Germany, notorious for political intimidation and violence in the 1920s and 1930s.
The term now applies broadly to any brutal enforcers of authoritarian rule: The regime sent its stormtroopers to silence protesters.
In the Star Wars franchise, stormtroopers are the faceless, white-armored soldiers of the Galactic Empire—a usage now more familiar than the historical one.
