stormtrooper

Nazi paramilitary member

A stormtrooper was originally a German soldier trained for aggressive assault tactics in World War I, part of specialized units that attacked enemy trenches.

The term later applied to Nazi paramilitary forces (the SA or Sturmabteilung) who enforced Hitler's rule through intimidation and violence.

More recently, stormtroopers are the white-armored soldiers of the Galactic Empire in Star Wars, depicted as faceless enforcers of authoritarian power: The stormtroopers missed every shot.

The word now suggests anonymous agents of oppression or, ironically, incompetent minions.
