brownshirts

Paramilitary political intimidators

Brownshirts were members of the Sturmabteilung (SA), the Nazi paramilitary organization in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s, named for their uniform color.

The term now applies more broadly to violent political thugs or fascist enforcers: The protesters were attacked by the mayor's brownshirts.

The word carries strong condemnation, invoking Nazi brutality.
