home guard
Civilian defense force
A home guard is a local defense force, typically composed of civilians or those unfit for regular military service, organized to protect a region during wartime or emergency.
The term applies to any such informal militia defending home territory rather than fighting abroad: The home guard patrolled the coast for signs of invasion. (Capitalized Home Guard refers to the British World War II force.)
