maquis

Coastal Mediterranean brush

Maquis refers to the dense, scrubby vegetation of Mediterranean coastal regions—aromatic shrubs like rosemary, thyme, and juniper growing in nearly impenetrable thickets.

During World War II, French resistance fighters who hid in such terrain became known as the Maquis, and the term now denotes any guerrilla resistance movement operating from wilderness hideouts: He joined the maquis after the occupation began.
