droid

Sci-fi robot, briefly

Droid is science fiction slang for a robot or android—a mechanical being, often humanoid, with artificial intelligence.

The term was popularized by Star Wars, where droids serve various functions from protocol to astromech.

Outside fiction, droid sometimes describes any automated system or person who acts mechanically: He's a total droid—just follows orders without thinking.
