soapbox
Impromptu speaker's crate
A soapbox is a makeshift platform someone stands on to deliver an impromptu speech, typically in a public place.
The term comes from the wooden crates once used to ship soap, which street orators would overturn and stand upon.
Today soapbox is mostly figurative, referring to any opportunity someone seizes to express strong opinions: He got on his soapbox about immigration policy.
To soapbox is to hold forth in this way, often at tiresome length.
