gag order
Judicial speech prohibition
A gag order is a legal directive prohibiting parties in a case from publicly discussing it.
Judges issue gag orders to prevent prejudicial publicity that could taint a jury pool or compromise a fair trial: The judge imposed a gag order on both attorneys.
The term extends to any official prohibition on speech: Employees were under a gag order about the merger.
