bema
Orator's raised floor
A bema is a raised platform or speaker's stand, especially in ancient Greek assemblies or early Christian churches.
In synagogues, the bema (also called bimah) is the elevated platform from which the Torah is read.
The term appears mainly in historical, architectural, or religious contexts: The rabbi ascended the bema to begin the service.
