rostrum

Where orators stand

A rostrum is a raised platform for public speaking or performance—a podium, lectern, or stage where someone addresses an audience: She stepped up to the rostrum to accept her award.

The word comes from Latin for "beak," originally referring to the prow of a warship; in ancient Rome, a speaker's platform was decorated with captured ship prows.

In biology, rostrum names beak-like projections on various animals.
