lecture

Professor's formal talk

A lecture is a formal talk given to an audience, typically for instruction: The professor's lecture on quantum mechanics lasted two hours.

The word carries connotations of one-way communication—someone speaks, others listen.

This spawns the disapproving sense: to lecture someone is to scold or admonish them at length, often condescendingly: Don't lecture me about responsibility.

A lecture hall is a room designed for such presentations.
