soapbox car
Downhill derby vehicle
A soapbox car is a small, unpowered vehicle built for coasting downhill, traditionally constructed by children from wooden crates, planks, and wagon wheels.
The name comes from the wooden boxes once used to ship soap.
Soapbox cars are steered but have no engine—gravity provides all the momentum.
Soapbox derbies are organized races for these vehicles: We spent all summer building our soapbox car for the neighborhood race.
