femme

Not a butch

Femme is a woman or wife, borrowed from French and appearing in English phrases like femme fatale (a seductive, dangerous woman).

In LGBTQ+ contexts, femme describes a queer person—especially a lesbian—who presents in a traditionally feminine way: She identifies as femme.

This contrasts with butch.

The term has been reclaimed as an identity marker celebrating femininity within queer culture.
