detox

Clearing the system

Detox is short for detoxification—the process of clearing harmful substances from the body.

In medical contexts, it refers to supervised withdrawal from drugs or alcohol: He checked into a detox facility.

More loosely, detox describes regimens meant to purge toxins through special diets or fasting: a juice detox, a digital detox.

The latter uses are often more aspirational than medical.
