free society
Open, rights-respecting nation
A free society is one in which citizens enjoy fundamental liberties—speech, assembly, movement, conscience—without arbitrary government interference.
The term appears frequently in political discourse, often as an ideal against which actual societies are measured: In a free society, people can criticize their leaders without fear.
What constitutes a genuinely free society remains contested, with disagreements over whether economic equality or minimal regulation better serves freedom.
