headrace

Water to wheel

A headrace is the channel that carries water toward a waterwheel, turbine, or mill.

It's the upstream counterpart to the tailrace, which carries water away after it has done its work.

The term appears in discussions of hydropower, historic mills, and water management: The headrace diverted water from the river to power the sawmill.
