powerslide

Controlled lateral slide

A powerslide is a controlled skid where a vehicle's rear wheels lose traction while the driver maintains steering control, used in racing and stunt driving: He hit the gas and threw the car into a powerslide around the corner.

The term also applies to a similar maneuver in skateboarding, rollerblading, or ice skating where the skater turns sideways to brake while sliding forward.

In video games, especially racing and kart games, the powerslide is often a core drifting mechanic that builds speed boosts.
