tailrace

Water wheel's drain

A tailrace is the channel that carries water away from a waterwheel or turbine after the water has done its work.

In hydroelectric plants and mills, water flows through the machinery and exits via the tailrace, returning to the river or stream downstream: The old mill's tailrace is still visible behind the building.
