Herculaneum

Pompeii's buried neighbor

Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town on the Bay of Naples, buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD alongside Pompeii.

Unlike Pompeii's ash burial, Herculaneum was engulfed by volcanic mud that hardened into rock, preserving organic materials like wood, food, and papyrus scrolls.

The site remains partially excavated, with modern Ercolano built above it.
