architrave

Entablature's lowest section

An architrave is the lowest part of an entablature in classical architecture—the horizontal beam that rests directly on the columns.

More commonly, architrave refers to the molding that frames a doorway or window: The carpenter installed new architraves around all the interior doors.

The term appears mostly in architectural and construction contexts.
