parterre

Formal garden arrangement

A parterre is a formal garden with beds arranged in geometric patterns, often separated by gravel paths.

The term comes from French, literally meaning "on the ground." In theaters, parterre refers to the ground-floor seating area, particularly the section beneath the balconies: We had seats in the parterre, close to the stage.
