hessian

Coarse bag fabric

Hessian is a coarse, heavy fabric woven from jute or hemp fibers, used for sacking, upholstery backing, and craft projects.

In British English, hessian is what Americans call burlap: The potatoes came in hessian sacks.

The fabric takes its name from the German region of Hesse, where it was originally produced. (Capitalized Hessian refers to people or things from Hesse.)
